What changed: per-message pricing, and a 2026 rate rise
In July 2025 Meta moved the WhatsApp Business API from per-conversation to per-message pricing: every business-initiated template message is billed individually, by category. In January 2026, third-party pricing roundups report that Indian rates rose roughly 10%, landing at about ₹0.8631 per marketing message with utility and authentication messages at roughly ₹0.115–0.145 per message (see sources below). Those are the defaults this calculator starts from — both rate fields are editable, so if Meta's official page says something different when you read this, put the official number in.
The structural point matters more than the exact paise: under per-conversation pricing, a 24-hour conversation cost the same whether it took three messages or thirty. Under per-message pricing, every extra message is a line item. That penalizes broadcast-blast workflows — where resolving one customer takes a blast, several follow-ups and a long back-and-forth — and rewards agents that answer precisely and resolve the conversation in fewer messages.
The broadcast-vs-agent math, honestly
The calculator's model is deliberately simple and fully visible under the results: it multiplies your monthly conversations by the business-sent messages per conversation on each side, priced at a blended rate from your marketing/utility mix. Side A is your workflow today; side B is the same conversations handled by an agent — with a messages-per-conversation number that you choose. The default is lower on the agent side because that is the entire premise being tested, but the tool makes no claim about what an agent will achieve for your business: it only computes what your own inputs imply. If you set both sides equal, it will happily show you a saving of zero.
Real Meta billing has nuances this model skips on purpose: free-form replies inside an open customer-service window are not billed as template messages, some utility messages inside that window are free, and volume tiers exist. Because the model treats every business-sent message as billable at your blended rate, it is a rough upper-bound estimate on both sides of the comparison, not an invoice forecast.
The most useful output is usually not the monthly total but the cost per resolved conversation. Per-message pricing turns message discipline into a unit economic: a support flow that resolves in four precise messages and one that meanders through twelve are no longer the same product at the same price.
